After school clubs offer students academic and social opportunities not always available during the normal school day. Over the past several years I have created after school clubs at both Ridgewood and Cutten Schools, with the generous support of the Cutten/Ridgewood PTA. For more on my thoughts on the advantages of after school learning, please see my blogpost on Graphite.org, From Legos to Maker Labs: Fun and Learning After School. Ridgewood Lego Club The Ridgewood Lego Club is a chance for students to create with everyone's favorite multicolored, plastic, building blocks-Lego! With nearly 16,000 pieces to select from, students and families are invited to build their own creations, or participate in the monthly build challenge. The Lego Club meets in the Ridgewood Commons on the first school Monday of each month from 2:15-3:00. Students must be accompanied by an adult to attend Lego Club. Please follow the Ridgewood Lego Club Facebook page for monthly updates and more. Cutten Maker Lab The Cutten Maker Lab brings the inspiring, creative power of the Maker Movement to the Cutten School Library on the second school Monday of each month from 3:00-4:00. Students are invited to explore and research their own projects and creations, from movie making to robotics. The Maker Lab has a variety of high and low tech materials on hand, from electronics kits to book making supplies, and we're adding more all the time. Students must have a signed permission form on file to participate, which are available in the Cutten office. Please check out the Cutten Maker Lab Facebook page for monthly updates and more. |
